Principles of rehabilitation Flashcards
What is rehabilitation?
Activities to help a person adjust, heal and return to a full, productive life after injury or illness. Restoration of optimal form and function
Why is rehabilitation important?
- Decreases risk of re-injury
- Cause of injury can be identified and corrected
- Ensures safe and timely return to sport
Rehabilitation team
- Surgeon
- Coach
- Doctor
- Psychologist
- Performance analysis
- Podiatrist
- Physiotherapist
- Sport rehabilitator
Principles of rehabilitation
- Avoid aggravation
- Timing
- The whole patient
- Individualisation
- Intensity
- Specific sequencing
- Compliance
Aggravation
Knowledge and good judgement of:
- Body’s reaction to injury
- Healing process
- What exercises to use and when
- When to progress the rehab process
Timing
- Therapeutic exercise should be used as soon as safely is possible without aggravating injury
- 3-4% of strength is lost in the first week of immobilisation
- Prolonged limitation of movement=tightening of joint capsule, ligaments, muscles and tendons
Individualisation
- Everyone responds differently to injury
- Programme design must recognise and consider individual differences
Factors influencing individuality:
- Condition before injury
- Type of sport
- Level of competition
- Support system
- Previous injury
- Previous rehab experience
- Goal pre-injury
Specific sequencing
The body’s healing response is a central component in successful rehab
Intensity
Rehab programme must be challenging without aggravating the injury
The whole patient
Physically and psychologically prepare the athlete to return to sport/competition
Compliance
Poor compliance=poor recovery
How to encourage compliance:
- Keep athlete informed
- Tell them what is expected of them
- Purpose of rehabilitation
- Relationship between you and the athlete
Goal of rehabilitation
- Restore pain-free range of motion
- Achieve full muscle strength
- Restore function
- Prevent de-conditioning of uninjured areas
- Achieve sport endurance
- Return to sport
Benefits of goal setting
- Increased motivation
- Aids positive thinking
- Helps focus
- Provides direction
- Increases self-confidence
- Aids healing
- Decreases risk of re-injury
- Encourages compliance
