Woven & Non- Woven Textiles Flashcards
Define warp
yarn following the length of a fabric
(vertical)
Define weft
yarn running horizontally across a fabric
Define weave
the way yarns are laid in a pattern / formation in construction of fabric
What do woven fabrics consist of?
Warp and weft yarns in an under/over configuration
What does a different weave create?
Creates fabrics with different textures, patterns and strength.
What is a plain weave?
Most basic weave - high number of intersections
3 Properties of a plain weave
Example of a plain weave
Stable, strong, gives an even surface on both sides of fabric
Example: calico
What is a twill weave?
Example
Gives a diagonal pattern + adds strength to fabric
Eg. denim
What are non woven fabrics?
webs of fibres that are glued, compressed or melted together without being woven/needing to convert fibres into yarn
Give two types of non woven fabrics
Felted
Bonded
How are felted fabrics produced?
By applying moisture, heat, pressure and friction to a web of fibres causing it to bind together. (wool + acrylic fibres are commonly used in this process)
Uses of felt
craft projects, accessories (eg hats), surface of snooker tables.
How are bonded fibres constructed?
From a web of fibres, held together by adhesives or stitching.
Why are most non woven fabrics often used to reinforce woven and knitted fabrics?
Because they are not strong enough to be made into garments
Uses of bonded textiles
& why!
Disposable products - surgical gowns, masks, cleaning wipes
Cheap to produce
