1.17 Communication of Design Ideas Flashcards
What is freehand sketching, and why is it used? (3)
- method of presenting ideas on paper without using drawing aids/formal drawing conventions
- used to produce early ideas for products
- done in 2D or 3D
What sort of areas do annotations cover? (4)
- inspiration behind each design
- pros/cons
- potential manufacturing methods
- meeting requirements of end user/spec
What are cut and paste techniques?
cutting pictures and images from different sources (eg newspapers)
used to make collages
Describe an example of using digital technologies in the design of products (3)
- taking photos of iterative models (to record development)
- videos of testing
- can be shared online
What is 3D model?
2 Advantages
(4 points)
- made using cheap materials eg styrofoam/ card
- allows design ideas to be visualised/handled/tested
- spot errors/improvement (no waste)
- shared w user: feedback
What is an isometric projection?
drawing objects in 3D with sides at a 30 degree angle
What is an oblique projection? (3)
drawn at 45 degrees, simpler to produce, not as realistic as isometric
What is perspective drawing?
Method of showing how an object gets smaller as it gets further away
What is the difference between one point and two point perspective drawings?
1 Point: objects being drawn converge towards a single varnishing point on a horizon line
2 Point: there are two varnishing points on either side of the horizon line (more realistic drawings)
What are orthographic projections?
working drawings showing 3D objects in 2D by showing the front, side and plan view of the product
What is the difference between 1st angle o.p and 3rd angle o.p?
1st - front drawn above plan view, side view drawn to its left
3rd - front drawn below plan, side drawn to its right
What does an exploded view show?
parts of a product suspended in space & separated - shows relationship between various parts of a product
What do assembly drawings show?
how all the different parts of a product fit together, with each part identified by a number
What does a schematic diagram show?
shows a circuit with individual components represented by symbols, and connections using straight lines
What are some advantages of using CAD to produce drawings/virtual models of designs?
- high accuracy of drawing and modelling
- changes made quickly + easily
- no materials/physical resources needed (costs reduced)
- 2D drawings can be produced directly from the 3D model (time reduced)
