1.11 Textiles Flashcards
What is yarn?
Fibres (fine, hair-like structures) spun together. Yarns are woven or knitted together to create textile fabrics.
What are natural fibres?
come from natural sources,
sustainable
biodegradeable
Where is wool sourced from?
Uses of wool:
Source: animal (sheep fleece)
Uses: warm outerwear, knitwear, carpets, blankets
Define absorbency and elasticity.
Absorbency: ability to soak up moisture
Elasticity: ability to stretch and return to shape
What are five properties of wool?
warm, absorbent, low flammability, good elasticity, crease resistant
Source & uses of cotton
Source: vegetable: cotton plant/seed pod
Uses: clothing, towels, sewing/knitting threads.
State 6 properties of cotton
absorbent, strong, smooth, flammable, cool to wear, can shrink
What are synthetic fibres?
Give an advantage & disadvantage of synthetic fibres.
They are artificial fibres.
:) - can be manufactured to specific requirements
:( - non biodegradable, come from unsustainable resources
Name 2 synthetic fibres
Polyester
Acrylic
Source & use of polyester
Source: fossil fuels (coal/petroleum)
Uses: versatile fabric used throughout textiles
Give 5 properties of polyester
Strong when wet and dry, flame resistant, thermoplastic, hardwearing, poor absorbency
Source & use of acrylic
Source: fossil fuels (petroleum)
Uses: knitwear, fake fur products eg toy, upholstery, carpets
State 4 properties of acrylic
Strong except when wet, thermoplastic, burns slowly then melts, poor absorbency
