wound healing Flashcards
stages of wound healing
inflammation, proliferation, remodeling
stage 1: inflammation
immediately after injury, 1-5 days, platelets aggregate, vasoconstriction
stage 2: proliferation
24-48 hours after injury, 5-21 days, granulation tissue forms and serves as the foundation for scar tissue, granulation secretes growth factors, epithelial cells proliferate to form a new surface and fill the gap
stage 3: remodeling
3 weeks after injury, 3-6 months long, scar tissue is structurally refined and reshaped
intention
the nature of the wound determines the processes the body uses to heal
primary intention
no loss of tissue, clean cut, no scar, regenerated epithelial cells
secondary intention
significant loss of tissue, irregular edges, fill wound from the bottom up with beefy red tissue
tertiary intention
extensive loss of deep tissue, open for 4-5 days, contaminated
dehiscence
when previously closed wound edges open and rupture
evisceration
when internal tissues and organs extrude from the open wound
keloid formation
increased collagen –> hypertrophic scar
contractures
inflexible shrinkage of wound tissue that pulls the edges towards the center of the wound
fistula
abnormal connection between tissues and organs
adhesions
abnormal bands of scar tissue that can form following invasive procedures
