3 levels of the EU Wine system framework highest to lowest
Protected designation of origin PDO -100% grown and produced in stated area
Protected geographical indication PGI -85% grown and produced in stated area. Can carry the name of a grape variety if made from min 85% of that variety. If 2 or more varieties are listed it must be 100% of those varieties listed in % order. If 100% of the grapes come from a named vineyard it can also be listed on the label.
Wine -Table wines with no geographic indication - sourced anywhere in the EU. Can list grape variety and/or vintage date if they are pro ducted from a min. of 85% of the named variety or vintage. Enables competition with New World varietally labeled wines.
