What is Schneider’s Dynamic Model?

A

There are five phases:

  1. Foundation- English brought into the new territory
  2. Exonormative stabilisation- colonising power looked to for model of use. They determine the language behaviour
  3. Nativisation- new varieties of the language emerge
  4. Endonormative stabilisation- new variety develops, users no longer look to original language
  5. Differentiation- internal diversity emerges, regional dialect/social class influences
