Transactional- to achieve something
Referential- provides listener with information
Interactional- to establish relationships
Phatic- small talk for social purposes
Expressive- highlights the speakers emotions, feelings and attitudes

What is the accommodation theory?
Individuals will converge (speech moves closer to the other person) or diverge (move further apart) to decrease or increase social distance. Some speakers will mutually diverge/converge

Texts choose to use conventions from a different genre

Deontic: concerned with degrees of obligation, permission, ability and necessity ‘you can go’
