Workshop 2 - Team design Flashcards
What is a behavioural task?
Over, physical behaviour to get the task executed
What is a conceptual task?
Planning, deciding and negotiating
What are McGrath’s 4 categories of team tasks?
Generate (creativity task), Choose (problem solving), Negotiate (resolving conflict) and Execute (psychomotor task)
What is a generate task?
To generate activities that can be used to create tangible outcomes, develop an action plan or solve a problem (divergent thinking)
What is a choose task?
Teams make a decision among several choice alternatives, choice tasks only have one outcome (convergent thinking)
What is a negotiate task?
To determine amount right or wrong answers through the negotiation of conflicting viewpoints, resources or personal interests (members give up something in exchange for something else)
What is an execute task?
To complete a set of tasks that require both cognitive and behavioural effort (requires considerable coordination among members)
What does interdependence mean?
The extent to which team members interact cooperatively to complete a task. High interdependence is characterised by high interaction and dependence on each other
What is pooled interdependence?
Group work is divided among members, and later compiled into a finished product
What is sequential interdependence?
A member is dependent on the completed work of another member before they can complete their own part
What is reciprocal interdependence?
Members influence one another as tasks are accomplished simultaneously with input from other members
What is intensive interdependence?
Members diagnose and problem solve together, and/or collaborate in order to accomplish a certain task
What are the 4 elements of team composition?
Stars (exceptional high performers), Solid citizens (have the relevant knowledge and skills to help a team), Marginal performers (close to good performance) and Chronic underachievers (capabilities fall well short of the requirements)
What are ground rules?
The explicitly stated standards that members are expected to adhere
