What is the definition of a group?
A collection of individuals who work together in completing a task, with individual goals.
What is the definition of a team?
A group of persons having collective, joined together to accomplish a common goal.
What is a pseudo-team?
There is no coordinated action as the common purpose is not seen as important
What is a work group?
Members interact primarily to help each individual perform their own area of responsibility
What is a potential team?
There is a commonly shared goal, but collective accountability has not yet been established
What is a real team?
There is complementarity of skills, a common purpose and mutual accountability
What is a high performance team?
Members are deeply committed to one another’s personal growth and success
What are the stages of Tuckmans (1965) theory of group development?
Stage 1: forming - members are generally cautious, tentative and over reliant on the group leader
Stage 2: storming - generally characterised by interpersonal conflicts (common purpose not yet established)
Stage 3: norming - there is now a renewed commitment to the goal and purpose of the group
Stage 4: performing - the structure at this point is fully functional and accepted
Stage 5: adjourning - wrapping up activities and preparing to disband
