Working Model Of Memory Flashcards
Who created WMM?
Baddeley and Hitch (1974)
What is the role of the Central Executive?
To manage the slave systems
What are the slave systems?
- Phonological loop
- Visuospatial sketchpad
- Episodic buffer (added in 2000)
What is the function of the PL?
To handle sound (acoustic information)
What is the function of the VSSP?
To handle sight (visual information)
What are the two subsystems of the PL?
- Articulatory loop: voices information being rehearsed
- Primary acoustic store: holds onto the memory of sounds
What is the function of the articulatory loop?
Subvocalisation (mental talking to yourself)
What is the function of the Episodic buffer?
To join the PL and VSSP by binding information together and forming it into an Episodic Memory
Where is the PL located?
The left hemisphere
Where is the VSSP located?
The right hemisphere
Where is the EB located?
In both hemispheres
Where is the CE located?
Cannot be found
What is the Cocktail Party Effect?
Trying to listen to two conversations at once
Give supporting evidence of WMM
- Brain scans show acoustic and visual encoding are carried out in different parts of the brain
- K.F. Struggled to process verbal information but his visual information was intact
- Williams syndrome - normal language ability but impaired visual
Give conflicting evidence of WMM
- Blind people have good spatial awareness despite having no visual awareness
- Brain scans cannot find the Central Executive
- Episodic buffer was added in 2000 -reliability issues
