Baddeley Flashcards
When was Baddeley carried out?
1966
What was the aim?
To find out whether the LTM encoded acoustically or semantically
How many pilot studies did Baddeley conduct before the official experiment?
2
What was the sample?
72 men and women from an applied psychology unit
What was the procedure?
- Participants put into 4 groups (IMD)
- Shown 10 words, 1 every 3 seconds
- Had to do recall tasks in which they were given the words but had to place them in the correct order
- Completed over 4 trials
- Given a 15 minutes interference task of copying 8 digits
- Surprise recall task
What were the results?
Acoustically similar words performed well whilst semantically similar words performed less well
What is he conclusion of the study?
The LTM encoded semantically whilst the STM encoded acoustically
Is Baddeley generalisable?
Yes because:
-Men and women were used
No because:
- All from the same applied psychology unit
- No age range specified
Is Baddeley reliable?
Yes because:
-4 trials were carried out
-Lab experiment = Standardised
Is Baddeley applicable?
Yes because:
-Shows how the STM and LTM are encoded
-Helps in revision
Is Baddeley valid?
No because:
- Lab experiment = low in ecological validity
- Unrealistic tasks = low in mundane realism
Is Baddeley ethical?
No because:
- Participants were deceived
- Didn’t give informed consent
However, nobody came to any harm
