Define Case Study
In-depth investigations of a single person, group or event
Why are case studies highly regarded in psychology?
Because they’re unique
Are case studies generalisable?
No because they’re unique therefore they can’t be related to the entire population
Are case studies reliable?
No because they usually occur by chance therefore the chance in replicating them is very slim
Are case studies applicable?
Yes because they’re rare so they can discover new information which can provide advancements in the profession of psychology
Are case studies valid?
Yes because they’re very rich in detail in real life cases
Are case studies ethical?
Usually there is no problem with ethics, however in some circumstances (e.g. patients with a mental illness) participants may be unable to give informed consent which makes the study unethical
