working memory model (WMM) Flashcards
what did the WMM suggest?
that STM has different components and so is an explanation of how STM is an active processor, how it’s organised and functions.
what is the WMM made up of (4)
-central executive system
-phonological loop
-visuo-spatial sketchpad
-episodic buffer
what does the central executive do and what’s its capacity?
-overall control
-processes all info from any senses
-limited capacity
what is the central exec responsible for?
control processes such as :
-monitoring incoming info
-making decisions
-retrieving info from LTM
what is the phonological loop and what’s it capacity?
slave system with limited capacity.
-deals with temporarily holding auditory information and is coded acoustically.
capacity is how much can be said in 2 seconds.
what does visual-spatial sketchpad store?
visual or spatial information when required. (temp)
-visual info (vision)
-spatial info (info in the physical relationship between things
what’s visuo spatial’s capacity?
3 or 4 objects. composed of visual cache.
What does the episodic buffer store?
information which integrates the visual, spatial and verbal information processed by other stores.
what does the episodic buffer link?
links working memory to LTM and wider cognitive processes such as perception.
CAPACITY -4 chunks.
