coding Flashcards
what is meant by coding?
the FORMAT in which information is STORED in the various memory stores
who did research on coding?
Baddely researched coding for STM and LTM
what was baddeleys procedure in investigating coding of memory?
Gave participants four sets of words to recall in ORDER.
1.acoustically similar words
2.acoustically different words
3.semantically similar words
4.semantically different words
what were the findings of the STM? (when asked to recall immediately)
found that participants made more mistakes on words that sounded alike (the acoustically similar set of words)
why did participants make more mistakes on the STM of acoustically similar words?
because STM info is coded acoustically. So when we recall the info from STM, the similar sounding words get muddled up
what were the findings of the LTM? (when asked to recall after 20 mins)
participants were more likely to confuse semantically similar words (Similar meaning words)
why were participants more likely to confuse semantically similar words in their LTM?
because LTM info is coded semantically -by its meaning. Therefore, when we recall information from our LTM we are more likely to mix up words if they have a similar meaning
what is one problem with Baddeleys research?
lack of mundane realism.
uses material that has no MEANING to participants.
learning words is ARTIFICIAL, unrealistic therefore making it harder to GENERALISE.
coding in STM is acoustic for UNREALISTIC materials such as these, but we can’t be sure coding is the same with more realistic materials.
