Q

one strength of the WMM is that it has research support for the existence of different stores.

A

Baddeley found that participants had MORE difficulty doing TWo visual tasks, rather than one visual and one verbal at the same time.

This SUPPORTS the WMM as it suggests that there are DIFF slave systems, and when you try to use the SAME one there is more COMPETITION meaning it’ll be a struggle to do both tasks at the same time.

Q

However, Baddelsys study can be criticised as…

A

it is UNREALISTIC, meaning it lacks mundane realisim and is ARTIFICIAL as done in a LAB environment.

Therefore findings may not GENERALISE beyond that setting and into real life, lacking external and ecological validity.

SO it supports the wmm in this artificial condition, but may not support wmm in REALISTIC conditions.

Q

one strength of the WMM is the case study of KF

A

As KF only had poor STM for verbal info but not visual, this SUPPORTS the WMM as it suggests that his phonological loop was damaged (as he couldn’t deal with verbal info) but his visuo-spatial sketchpad was NOT damaged as his visual memory was fine.

This therefore, suggests that the stm DOES have seperate stores, supporting the WMM.

Q

however this a case study and so…

A

talk about issues with case-studies.

*idiographic
*may not generalise to others just because KF has
*unclear whether KF had any other impairments which have affected his memory performance
