types of LTM- EVALUATION Flashcards
what is a strength of the existence of the different types of LTM stores?
case of Clive Wearing, as he found it difficult to retrieve events from his past (episodic memories) but not his procedural memories such as how to play the piano. This SUPPORTS the idea that our ltm is SEPERATE and stored in DIFFERENT parts of the brain.
weaknesses of using a case study include…
*idiographic nature, harder to generalise
*can’t 100% prove LTM is separate as data can’t be applied widely from Clive.
*Clive may have already had some problems, we are unaware of what his memory was like before the study.
THEREFORE this is a limitation as we don’t KNOW what caused the amnesia, could be other variables which haven’t been controlled and so this questions the INTERNAL VALIDITY of the study.
a strength that there are diff types of LTM is brain scans. This is because…
a brain scan from Tulving found that episodic memories reside in the right side whilst semantic memories reside in the left.
This SUPPORTS the ltm as it provides EVIDENCE that it is stored SEPARATELY.
This has also been found in LATER research studies which INCREASES the validity of the LTM as it has research support for diff stores.
another strength of research into seperate ltm stores is that it has real-life application as..
it has enabled them to be used in real life application of treatment and can be used to treat someone who has a specific type of ltm impaied.
this is therefore a POSITIVE of the research into diff ltm stores as it means we can SPECIFICALLY target diff types of ltm.
