one strength for the msm is that there is research support from Baddeleys study, to prove that stm and ltm are independant stores.
Baddeley found that in the STM memory is coded acoustically, whereas in the LTM info is coded semantically.
THIS SUPPORTS stm and ltm being separate as they are both CODED differently, proving information PASSES between each store in a linear way.
However, one issue with Baddelys research being used to support the msm is that it was carried out using artifical materials
this is an ISSUE as they are unrealistic and lack mundane realism.
This is a PROBLEM because we may not find the SAME thing out about memory if we used REALISTIC tasks, and not a list of words with no meaning.
THEREFORE, this lowers the external validity, making results harder to GENERALISE.
however case study of HM supports the msm
explain details of case study, that his ltm was affected but not his stm. proves they are seperate and independant stores.
However HM is a case study which can be problematic because…
it is only ONE individual who has been studied and is therefore an IDIOGRAPHIC approach.
therefore this lacks POPULATION validity, and GENERALISABILITY as the results may not relate back to the population as a whole.
one weakness of the msm is that it states that the stm is one store, however the case of KF contradicts this as…
KF’s stm was only partly damaged as his verbal info was impaired but his visual info was normal.
THEREFORE, this goes against the msm as it claims there’s only ONE store form stm to process different types of information, as KF could recall visual but not verbal. And so in theory, shouldn’t have been able to recall anything from the stm if it was a unitary store.
another weakness of the msm is that there is research to suggest that the ltm is not just one store.
research has found that there are DIFF types of ltm stores. For example. semantic memories that include facts, and procedural memories which include memories on how to do things.
THEREFORE, this goes against the msm that claimed there was only ONE ltm store..
