multistore model (MSM) Flashcards
what does the multi store model of memory consist of?
3 seperate stores
1. sensory register
2. STM
3. LTM
MSM states that these are independent and separate stores and the information PASSES through each store in a LINEAR way through various processes.
What is the coding, capacity, and duration of the sensory register?
CODING: depends on the way it ENTERS. can be visual, acoustic, or haptic (touch)
CAPACTIY- High. 100million celss in each eye which store data
DURATION: less than 1/2 a second.
What is the coding, capacity, and duration of the STM?
CODING: acoustic
CAPACITY: limited of 5-9 chunks
DURATION: 18-30 seconds unless rehearsed
wht hppened in teh case study of HM?
underwent brain surgery to relieve his epilepsy, and his hippocampus was removed from both sides of his brain, which is central to memory function.
very little recall of the operation, and couldn’t remember speaking with someone an hour earlier.
LTM tested but never improved with practise. Would read same magazine without remembering it. No recall on what he ate earlier in the same day.
However, performed well on tests of IMMEDIATE memory span-STM.
What is the coding, capacity, and duration of the LTM
CODING: semantic, by what it MEANS
CAPACITY: unlimited
DURATION: potentially unlimited.
how does the case of HM support the multi-store model?
The MSM states that there are SEPERATE and INDEPENDANT memory stores-ltm and stm.
what happened to HM is proof that it’s possible to damage ONE of the stores and still have the other remaining unaffected. can be proven here as his ltm is affected but stm is not.
