Working memory model Flashcards
who came up with the working memory model?
Baddeley and Hitch
What is the main part of the WMM?
central executive
what are the 3 slave systems called?
Visuo-spatial sketch pad
episodic buffer
phonological loop
what are the 2 inner bits of the visuo spatial sketch pad?
inner scribe
visual cache
what are the 2 inner stores in the phonological loop?
store
articulatory process
what does the inner scribe do?
forms mental image
what does the visual cache do?
spatial awareness
wat does the store within the phonological loop do?
holds the words you hear
what does the articulatory process do?
words that are heard or seen
what 4 things does the central executive do?
plan, coordinates and problem solves.
Directs attention to particular tasks and determines how resources are allocated
what does the visuo-spatial sketch pad do?
Can plan a spatial task and it where visual spatial info is stored
what does the episodic buffer do?
holds info that relates to visual and acoustic info
what does the phonological loop do?
deals with auditory info and preserves the order of info
what is once strength for the idea that there are 2 seperate stores?
PET scans
Explain the PET scans evaluation point
it shows that different parts of the brain are active when using different slave systems (thus supporting their existence)
It shows that the frontal cortex is active when using the central executive and that right side of the occipital lobe is when using the VSSP
what is one weakness to this model?
The CE is said to be the most important even though this is the one we know least about
can you explain the weakness of this model
the CE is the one we have researched the least even though it is supposed to be the most important.
E.g a man who had trauma to the brain following the removal of a tumour, retained a high IQ but found it difficult to make decisions- both tasks involve the CE
This suggests even the CE might be multi-component, we dont know so the model in incomplete
what is the evidence for the phonological loop?
Baddeley found that more short words were remembered than long words. However, when he asked participants to repeat “la la la” over and over again (known as a suppression task) he found that shorter words were no better remembered. this suggests the PL is filled with the suppression task and so doesnt have the capacity to also rehearse the words
what is the evidence for the VSSP?
Baddeley gave participants a tracking task and an imagery task to complete at the same time. These could not be completed at the same time as they were both visual and requires the use of the VSSP. However, participants could complete an imagery task and a verbal task showing they use different slave systems
