memory for immediate events that lasts for a short amount of time and memories disappear unless rehearsed. Has a limited duration and capacity. Sometimes called “working memory”

memory for events that happened in the past. Lasts from 2 minutes to 100 years. Potentially has an unlimited capacity and duration

a measure of how much can be held in memory. Measured in terms of bits of information such as number of digits

A
the capacity of STM can be enhanced by grouping together sets of digits or letters into meaningful units of “chunks”
