the cognitive interview Flashcards
what is the purpose of the cognitive interview?
to improve he accuracy of EWT in police interviews
What are the 2 main forces behind the development of the Ci?
the need to improve the effectiveness of police interviews when questioning witnesses
apply the results of psychological research to this area
What are the 4 main principals behind the CI?
report everything
Mental reinstatement of original context
Changing the order
Perspective changing
What is one way to remember the RMCP?
Running
Meg
Cooks
Pasta
what is report everything?
the interviewer encourages the reporting of every single detail even though it may seem irrelevant
what is mental reinstatement of original context?
the interviewer encourages the interviewee to mentally recreate the environment and contacts from the original event
what is changing the order?
the interviewer may try alternative ways through the timeline of the incident e.g. reversing the order
what is changing perspective?
interviewee is asked to recall the incident from multiple perspectives e.eg other witnesses
What did Kohnken et al do?
a meta-analysis of 53 students, he found on average an increase of 34% in the amount of correct information generated in the CI.
What si a weakess of Kohnkens experiment?
It was tested on volunteer witnesses so could have been affected by demand characteristics. It was also done as a lab experiment t?
Milne and Bull examined what?
the relative effectiveness of each of the 4 componenets
What did Milne and Bull do?
Undergraduate students and children were interviewed just using one component of the CI. Compared to a control condition, recall across each of the four individual components was broadly similar and no different to that of the control group. However when participants were interviewed using report everything and mental reinstatement, their recall was significantly higher
what age range is the CI more useful for?
older people
why is the CI more useful for older people?
Negative stereotypes make older people more cautious, the CI stresses to include every detail regardless of whether it is insignificant
What did Mello and Fisher do?
Compared old and young adults’ memory of a filmed simulated crime using either CI or standard interview. CI produced more information but the advantage over the SI was greater for older people
