Working Memory Model Flashcards
Who created the Working Memory Model?
Baddeley and Hitch
What does the WMM suggest?
STM can complete two tasks at the same time.
What are the four components of the WMM?
-The Central Executive
-The Phonological Loop
-The Visuo-Spatial Sketchpad.
-Episodic Buffer
What does the Central Executive do?
-Controls the other sub components and decides which is required for the task.
What is the Phonological Loop divided into?
-Phonological Store
-Articulatory Store
What does the phonological store do?
-The inner ear.
-Linked to speech perception.
-Receives auditory info and remembers sounds.
What does the Articulatory Store do?
-Inner voice
-Linked to speech production.
-Prepares sound and speech.
What are the functions of the Visuo-Spatial Sketchpad?
-Inner eye
-Stores material about form and colour.
How does the Phonological Loop code information?
Acoustically
How does the Visuo-Spatial Sketchpad code information?
Visually
What does the Episodic Buffer do?
-Brings together diff types of info from other components.
-Links to LTM.
Evaluate the WMM.
+Supporting evidence from dual tasked activities.
Baddeley’s dual task performance study illustrated that performance was worse when completing two visual tasks simultaneously.
+Supporting evidence from brain scans.
Brain activity was higher in Broca’s area when completing a verbal task, whereas occipital lobe was activated when doing a visual task.
-Reductionist
There is not enough information about how the central executive actually works, it may have seperate stores. This raises doubts about the accuracy of the WMM.
