Social Influence processors Flashcards
(Social change through minority influence)
What is the order of the processes?
- Drawing attention to an issue
- Cognitive conflict
- Consistency of position
- Argumentation principle
- Snowball effect
- Social change occurs
What is cognitive conflict?
Minority challenges majorities existing view
What is argumentation principle?
If minority is willing to suffer they will be taken more seriously by the majority.
What is the snowball effect?
Minority gathers support gradually more and more until social change occurs.
Give an advantage of the role of social influence processes.
+Supporting evidence from Nolan et al.
He discovered that minority influence was more effective when combined with NSI.
+Strength, there are practical applications.
You can use the processes in real life to bring about change.
Give a disadvantage of the role of social influence processes.
-Methodological issues in the research.
There were artificial pieces of research and did not reflect real life behaviour, the research therefore lacks ecological validity.
-The role of minority social influence in social change may be overestimated.
Have to have a receptible audience and in reality, it takes a long time for change to actually occur.
