Minority Influence Flashcards
What are the 3 factors that affect minority influence?
- Consistency
- Commitment
- Flexibility
Explain consistency.
Repeating the same message.
Synchronic= same as each other.
Diachronic= do the same but overtime.
Explain commitment.
The more dedication the minority show, the more influential they will be on the majority.
Explain flexibility.
If not flexible then the minority can be seen as unreasonable to the majority which is off putting and is unlikely to result in any change.
What is the ‘snowball effect’?
Gradually, the minority view has become the majority view and change has occurred.
Give an advantage of minority influence.
+Supporting evidence from Moscovici.
36 blue slides, confederates said they were green.
Consistent condition= confederate said green every time, 8.5% of pps agreed.
Inconsistent condition= confederate said green 24 times, 1.25% of pps agreed.
Therefore, therefore the more consistent, the more influential.
Give a disadvantage of minority influence.
-There may be other factors to consider.
It seems that you are more influential to a majority if you are similar to the group you are trying to influence, they can relate to you.
-Has methodological issues.
Demand characteristics (screw/please you).
