The Multi Store Model of Memory Flashcards
Who developed the MSM?
Atkinson and Shiffrin
What are the 3 separate unitary stores?
-Sensory register
-Short term memory
-Long term memory
What does the MSM suggest?
Information flows through 3 seperate stores in a fixed linear order, each store has diff roles in the memory process.
How is information gathered in the sensory register?
From our sense organs (touch, feel, see, smell, feel etc).
How does information get passed fro the sensory register to the STM?
Attention
How is information held in STM?
Maintenance rehearsal
How is information passed from STM to LTM?
Prolonged rehearsal and semantic rehearsal.
How does forgetting occur in STM?
Displacement and decay.
How does forgetting occur in LTM?
Decay, interference and retrieval failure.
Evaluate the MSM.
+Supporting evidence from case studies.
KF suffered brain damage as a result of a motorcycle accident. Had no effect on LTM but it led to poor performance on many STM tasks.
-MSM is far too simplistic.
Clive Wearing supports this, he lost his declarative (events) memory but still had use of his procedural memory. These are both types of LTM.
-Research lacks face validity.
MSM suggests rehearsal is the only way of transferring info from STM to LTM, but it is clear we do not always need to rehearse info to remember it. Things may have a meaning and are therefore easier to remember (funny)
