Working Memory Flashcards
What do perceptual systems do?
Store images for a short period
What is Short term memory?
The retention of information over periods of a few seconds
How is short term memory measured by?
Digit span
What are the three things that help remember order?
Chaining, Context and Primacy
Define chaining
When each item is associated with the next
What is context
Each items linked to a changing context which acts a as a recall cue
What is primacy?
Having the most activation to the first item of order
What is Working Memory?
A system enabling to hold information in mind when performing complex task
What are the components of Working memory
Phonological loop, Visuo-Spatial sketch pad, central executive
What is the phonological loop?
A working memory component that is responsible for temporary storage of speech like information
What are the two components of the phonological loop
A passive phonological store directly concerned with speech perception, and an articulatory process linked to speech production
What is the phonological similarity effect
The finding that serial recall of verbal material is reduced when the items sound similar.
What is Articulatory Suppression
Rapid repetition of a simple sound which uses the articulatory control process of the phonological loop.
What is the word length effect?
The finding that verbal memory span decreases when longer words are presented
What are the 4 things that the 1975 Baddeley paper find on the “World Length Effect”
1) World length is correlated with reading speed
2) Long words take longer to rehearse
3) Negative correlation between word length and recall
4) People recall as many words as can be read in 2seconds
