Selective Attention 1 Flashcards
What is selection
The prioritisation of a subset of information
Why do we need selection
The brain receives information from multiple sensory systems and not all information is relevant at any one time. The physiological limits imposed by effector systems and capacity limits are associated with neural function and metabolism
What does the physiology of visual system impose constraints on
On the type and amount of information observers obtain from the environment
What is covert attention
When the brain attends to an object without moving the eyes towards that object
What does it mean when something is exogenous
It means it is stimulus driven and involuntary. It has a fast rise time and inhibition of return
What does it mean when something is endogenous
It means it is goal driven with a slow rise time and a long lasting bias
What is selective attention
The act of focusing on a particular object for a while, simultaneously ignoring distractions and irrelevant information.
