Work And Energy Flashcards
What is the work done on an object
The work done on an object is the product of the displacement and the component of the force that is parallel to the displacement
What is gravitational potential energy
The energy an object possesses due to its position relative to a reference point (Ep=mgh)
What is kinetic energy
The energy an object has as a result of its motion (Ek = 1/2mv^2)
What is mechanical energy
The sum of gravitational potential energy and kinetic energy (Em=Ep+Ek)
What is the law of conservation of energy
The total energy in a system cannot be created nor destroyed only transformed from one form to another
What is the principle of conservation of mechanical energy
In the absence of air resistance or any external forces, the mechanical energy of an object is constant (I.e. Ep and Ek is constant)
What is the normal force
The perpendicular force than a surface extents on a object in contact with it
What is the work energy theorem
The work done by a net force on an object is equal to the change in kinetic energy of the object
