Approval process
a) The proposal would have to be submitted to the relevant ethics committee.
b) A covering letter showing ethics committee approval should be sent with the research proposal to the relevant hospital requesting permission to interview patients.
c) The hospital ethics committee will review the proposal.
d) Once permission granted, patients may be invited to participate in the study. Information sheets written in plain language should be distributed and patients can then contact the researcher if they wish to participate.
e) When the patient contacts the researcher, a meeting should be arranged to answer any questions and obtain written consent. Consent form should state how patient confidentiality and anonymity will be ensured as well as the right to withdraw at any time without prejudice.
f) Each patient should be allowed sufficient time to ask questions and read the consent form before signing.
