Wood Flashcards
Hardwood
definition & examples
Hardwood comes from deciduous(leafy) trees. Its used for flooring and indoor furniture
ex: oak, maple, teak, ash
Softwood
definition & examples
Softwood comes from coniferous(evergreen) trees. Its used for construction and outdoor furniture.
ex: pine, spruce
Modified woods (definition & examples)
Modified wood is made by putting different scraps of wood together and uses glue, plastics & preservatives
ex: plywood, particle board, mdf
Hardness Property for wood
Explain
Healthier trees have a higher level of hardness. Moisture content varies among, and cold temperature increase hardness. Rot affects the hardness of wood.
Elasticity Property for wood
Explain
Wood has good elasticity. It can suffer many impacts without being permanently deformed. Defects and rot also reduces the elasticity.
Resilience Property for wood
Explain
When wood has adequate moisture content it is resilient and resistant to breakage. When
wood is dry, it breaks easily.
Ductility Property for wood
Explain
Wood has very little to no ductility. It can scarcely be stretched at all.
Malleability Property for wood
Explain
Heat increases the malleability of wood. A plank or piece of wood can be bent if it is heated
to a certain amount.
Tensile strength Property for wood
Explain
Wood has excellent tensile strength so it is often used to support heavy loads. Hardwood
has more tensile strength than softwood. Rot decreases the tensile strength of wood.
