Assisted Reproduction(Test #3-Nov.11) Flashcards
What does assisted reproduction(AST) represent?
It represents all the medical procedures that help in the union of an ovum and a spermatozoon for the purpose of achieving fertilization.
What does assisted reproduction help with?
AST techniques have been developed to help infertile couples conceive a child.
Explain infertility.
Infertility is the term for a couple’s inability to conceive a child naturally after a year of sexual relations.
What could be the leading causes of infertility?
It can be linked to malformations of the reproductive system caused by sexually transmitted infections(STIs).
4 types of treatments for AST:
- Hormonal treatments
- Artificial Insemination
- In vitro fertilization
- Intracytoplasmic sperm injection
Explain the hormonal treatments.
Taking some hormone-based drugs can correct infertility by triggering ovulation. Taking hormones can often cause the ovaries to produce more than one ovum per cycle, which can result in multiple pregnancies.
Explain Artificial Insemination.
It is the introduction of spermatozoa directly into the women’s uterus. This treatment is done during ovulation and requires the use of a catheter(very fine tube).
Explain In vitro fertilization.
It is a treatment where the ova are fertilized by spermatozoa in the laboratory.
The embryos obtained are then transplanted in the women’s uterus, where they continue their development.
Explain Intracytoplasmic sperm injection.
This treatment involves forcing the spermatozoa into the ovum.
This technique is used when there are not enough sperm cells available for the fertilization. The ova are collected, the spermatozoa and ova are then inserted into the ovum using microscopic tools.
