Pure Substances & Mixtures Flashcards
What is an element?
Give an example.
An element is a pure substance that contains only one type of atom; it is impossible for an element to be separated
Ex: gold
What is a compound?
Give an example.
A compound is a pure substance that contains two or more atoms that have been chemically combined; it can be separated
Ex: carbon dioxide
What is a pure substance?
Give an example.
A pure substance contains only one type of atom
Ex: iron
What is a characteristic property?
Is one that helps us identify a pure substance or the group to which the pure substance belongs
Definition of a physical characteristic property.
This property helps us identify a pure substance without changing the nature of the substance in the process.
Definition of a chemical characteristic property.
This property helps us identify a pure substance, but during the process, the nature of the substance may be changed.
4 examples of char. physical prop. of matter

Definition of heterogeneous mixture.
Give an example.
Is made up of at least two substances that can be distinguished with the naked eye.
Ex: granite
Definition of homogeneous mixture.
Give an example.
Is made up of at least two substances that cannot be distinguished with the naked eye.
Ex: apple juice
Definition of colloid.
Give an example.
Is a homogeneous mixture in which at least two substances can be distinguished under a magnifying instrument.
Ex: blood, when looked through a microscope we can see red and white cells
Definition of a solution(mixtures).
Is a homogeneous mixture in which it is impossible to distinguish its constituent parts, even under a magnifying instrument
Ex: apple juice
Definition of a solute.
A solute is a substance that can be dissolved into a another substance
Definition of solvent.
Give an example.
A solvent is a substance in which can dissolve a solute.
Ex: water
