Court of chancery
the main court of equity in the kingdom, where wolsey presided over.
Served fair + cheap justice
Justice was slow as it became too popular + oversubscribed.
court of star chamber
1516- extended the use of the star chamber to increase fair + cheap justice, encourage private lawsuits and heard cases of misconduct.
-Became the centre of both govt + justice under wolsey
-Local authority officers appointed to enforce royal law.
Court of requests
-a court set up by Wolsey to allow the poor access to justice.
Evaluation
-Increased respect from poor, but also enemies amongst the rich
-Wolsey abused his system to target his enemies.
-1517- Sir Robert Sheffield was imprisoned for being an accessory to crime.
-Eltham ordinance- never carried out (still became powerful w/o it), fuelled by selfish desire for survival.
-Subsidy gain= overshadowed by royal need for money.
-Amicable grant- shook Henry’s faith in history.
-Wolsey wasn’t actually able to carry out the majority of his ideas e.g. amicable grant.
Administration: church
As papal legate= had more importance over Archbishop of Canterbury.
-Dissolved 30 religious houses+ used the money to build colleges at oxford + Ipswich.
-Became centralised under his control.
Privy chamber
Transformed privy chamber- small but prestigious part of the royal household.
-Replaced Henry’s minions with his own to gain more control, BUT they were able to regain their positions: ‘Gentlemen of the privy chamber’.

-1515
-Wolsey wanted to increase revenue from crown lands.
-money was granted right away at the beginning of Henry’s reign.
Subsidy
-Grant issued by parl to sovereign for the states needs.
-1513 subsidy- tax of 1 shilling in the pound for land worth £50
-Assessed the wealth of the rich.
Eltham ordinances
1526
-tried to reform royal household to ensure his political supremacy.
-Ordinances—> nothing as he found other ways to secure power.
