Where does the nasal cavity begin and end?
Anterior nares to the back edge of the nasal septum
The nasal cavity becomes what past the nasal septum?
Nasopharynx
What are the concha?
Fold of bone covered by mucous membranes projecting into the nasal cavity from the side wall
The nasal cavity is lines by what epithelium?
Respiratory epithelium (ciliated columnar pseudostratified epithelium) and goblet cells
Describe the function of the nasal cavity.
It warms the incoming air
The goblet cell secrete mucous which dust will stick to therefore filtering the air
The cilia move the mucous back into the nasopharynx to be swallowed
So the nasal cavity, warms, moistens and filters the air that is breathed in
Describe the blood supply in the nasal cavity.
Rich plexus of capillary beds underneath the epithelium
Note: when in bed at night, nostril near bed is more conjested with blood so only breath through top nostril
What epithelium is found on lateral wall and roof of nasal cavity?
olfactory epithelium for smell
What are the names for the spaces that air pass through under the concha?
Meatus
Where does the frontal sinus open up into?
The hiatus semilunaris (near middle concha) [as does the maxillary sinus]
Where does the sphenoid sinus open at?
Sphenoethmoidal recess
What is the ethmoidal bulla and where is it found?
A projection of bone that contains ethmoidal air cells found just above the hiatus semilunaris
The floor of the nasal cavity is also what?
The hard palate
The nasolacrimal sac drains what and where does it open ?
Drains tears
Opens in nasal cavity underneath the inferior nasal concha at its highest point
Describe the symptoms of a child who has a lego stuck in their nose. What would happen when it is removed?
Pus draining from nasal cavity and bad breath
Lego probs lodged in front of inferior nasal concha. When pulled out will bleed profusely and quickly due to rich capillary network
What bone forms the roof of the nasal cavity?
Ethmoid bone (cribriform plate)
