Wk 10 Special Senses Flashcards
What makes special senses different from general senses? (Don’t just say they are ‘special’,
explain how.)
Have receptor cells in specialized sensory organs
- For taste, smell, vision, & hearing
List the 5 categories of sensory receptors:
- Chemoreceptors = Response to chemicals for taste, smells, & blood pH detection
- Photoreceptors = Response to light
- Mechanoreceptors = Response to physical forces, motion, touch, hear, & etc.
- Thermoreceptors = Detection for any temp change
- Nociceptors = Response to damaged tissue (pain)
A small receptive field is associated with MORE precise sensation or LESS precise sensation?
MORE precise (specific) sensation
List the correct order of the eye
(Retina, lens, cornea, primary visual cortex, aqueous humor, optic nerve, vitreous
body, pupil)
Cornea, Aqueous humor, Pupil, Lens, Vitreous body, Retina, Optic nerve, & Primary visual cortex ?
Sclera
“white, fibrous layer of eye”
Function of Cornea
“Clear covering that lets light pass through anterior eye”
Choroid
“The eye’s highly vascular middle layer”
Function of Ciliary body
“Smooth muscle that controls lens’ shape”
Iris
“Colored part of anterior eye that’s around the pupil”
Pupil
“Open hole in the middle of the iris that light passes through inside the eye”
Retina
“Inner, light-sensitive layer that includes photoreceptors”
Optic disc
“Spot on the retina where axons exit & blood vessels come in”
Macula
“Oval-shaped pigmented area for high-resolution, color vision”
Aqueous humor
“Clear, watery fluid that fills space anterior to lens”
Lens
“Transparent structure that focuses light on retina”
