What is data?
The raw facts describing characteristics of an event.
What are the different types of data?
Alphanumeric, image, audio, video.
What is information?
Data converted to a meaningful and useful context.
Whats the difference between data and information?
That application of knowledge.
An awareness/ understanding of information and how that information can be made useful to support specific tasks or decision making.
What are the 3 types of information?
Primary - 1st hand
Secondary - collected by others or for other purposes.
Tertiary - summaries or collections of data.
Characteristics of valuable info.

Level / format / granularity / transactional / analytical / timely / consistent / unique / current
- Information level - individual, departmental, organisational.
- Format - form it is presented in eg, docs, presentations, reports.
- Granularity - level of detail eg fine = detailed, course = summary.
- Transactional info – all info in a business process or unit supporting daily operational tasks.
- Analytical info – all organisational info supporting managerial tasks used in decision making.
- Timely info – timeframe as it relates to the nature of the business decision.
- Accuracy
- Consistency – how a summary reflects the nature of the individual records.
- Uniequeness – are the fields represented once?
- Current info
- Completeness

Data stored in tables, tables linked.
Define Database Management System (DBMS). [Business Intelligency] [MIS management info sytem]
Application / programme used to query the info in a database to produce relevant information to base decisions on.
What is organisational information culture
How orgs value, use & share infor to achieve success / avoid failure.
4 types of org info cultures
FSID
Info functional - e’ees use info to gain power over each other.
Info sharing - e’ees share infor to improve performance
Info inquiring - e’ees search for infor to improve.
Info discovering - e’ees open to insights about crisis & change to create competitive adv.
Define knowledge mment
Applying IT to the corporate knowledge / memory to solve business problems.
