wind Patterns Flashcards
Sea breeze
When warm air from the land rises and cold air from the water sinks happen during the day the breeze is blowing towards the land from the sea the land warms faster than the water during the day so when the warm up goes upward form the land cold air takes it place
Convection currents
When gases and liquids rise and sink in a circular path
Land breeze
When cold air form the land sinks and warm air from the water rises happens during the night the breeze blows towards the sea from the land the land becomes cooler than the water at night the warm air over the water moves up as cool air takes its place
Coriolis Effect
The rotation of the earth causes objects in the northern hemisphere to deflect to the right while objects in the Southern Hemisphere are deflected to the left.
Jet stream
A band of very fast moving wind caused by differences in temperatures. It about 10km above the ground. It moves West east in the northern hemisphere.
Trade winds
Winds that blow TOWARDS the equator. It brings cooler air to the equator.
Doldrums
A spot near the equator where there are very few winds.
El Niño
A band of warm ocean temperatures that develop off the coast of South America and they can cause droughts. They warm up climate and are in the pacific
La Niña
A band of cold ocean temperatures that develop off the coast of the US they can cause more precipitation and they cool down the climate. In the Pacific
Gulf Steam
An ocean current found in the Atlantic that brings warmer temperatures to the easy coast of the US
Prevailing easterlies
winds that are found near the poles they move from east to west
Prevailing westerlies
Winds that blow away form the equator they blow west to east and are found over the us
Prevailing winds
Winds that blow away from the equator, they bring warm air to the poles
Gulf Stream
An ocean current found in the Atlantic that bring warmer temperatures to the east coast of the us
