Water On Earth Flashcards
Water Cycle
The constant movement of water around the earth
Evaporation
When water changes from liquid to gas
Condensation
When water vapor turns to liquid
Precipitation
When water falls from a cloud as rain, sleet, snow, or hail.
Runoff
Water moving down hill
Accumulation
Water collecting at the lowest point
Sublimation
Is ice changing into water vapor without first melting
Frost
Ice crystals that form when the temperature is below freezing
Transpiration
Evaporation of water from plant leaves
Cirrus clouds
A thin, wispy, white, cloud made of ice crystals. Altitude- 12,000meters
Vertical Clouds
Clouds that form vertically sometimes called thunder heads or cumulonimbus. Altitude- 8,000
Cumulus
A puffy, white, cotton ball cloud where the bottom looks dark because little sunlight get through. Altitude- 6,000
Stratus cloud
A cloud where it is layered and covered the whole sky and looks darker Altitude- 2,000
Fog
A stratus cloud at ground level
Rain
A liquid that falls from clouds when it is above 32f
Snow
When water droplets start to fall from the cloud and then enter an area where it is below 32f and freeze into snow!!!
Hail
When in a thunderhead cloud the ice crystals form + start to fall from the cloud but wind pushes the ice crystals back up into the clouds and when the ice crystals start to fall again, they grow and the process keeps happening until the hailstones become to big for the wind to push back up into the clouds so they start to fall down back out of the cloud again.
Freezing Rain
When it starts to rain and when it’s hits an object under 32f it freezes and becomes freezing rain!!!!
Sleet
When water falls from a cloud and enters an area where it is above 32f and turns into rain then the rain enters and area where it is below 32f and turns into sleet.
