PPP
point-to-point protocol. layer 2 protocol on dedicated leased lines. simultaneously transmit multiple layer 3 protocols, each one runs an instance of PPP’s link control protocol (LCP)

PAP
password authentication protocol
CHAP
challenge-handshake authentication protocol
PPPoE
PPP over Ethernet
DSL
digital subscriber line. Common in many SOHO locations. Provides high-speed data transmission over existing telephone wiring.
SONET
synchronous optical network. layer 1 tech that uses fiber optics as media. Topology can be bus or ring.
satellite
Used in remote or rural locations where DSL/modem are not available. weather can interfere.
MPLS
multiprotocol label switching. WAN tech used by service providers. Supports multiple protocols on the same network.
