Wi-fi Flashcards
What are the two means by which Wi-fi is transmitted
Radio waves
Infrared light
What is the IEEE standard for Wifi?
802.11
What is a wap
Wireless access point - Essentially, a wi-fi version of a switch
By what means does a wap get its power and ethernet over one cable?
Power over ethernet
How can one extend the range of their poe cable?
PoE injectors
How does wi-fi Carrier Sense Collision detection work?
Node wanting to transmit data listens on the network for any data being broadcast. If it is, it’ll wait a random amount of time before trying again.
How does RTS/CTS work?
Request to send - Clear to Send works by the node wanting to transmit data sending a special packet (Request to send) to the recipient. When the recipient is ready for data it will send a “Clear to send” packet back to the sender. The sender then sends the data, and the receiver sends ack packets to confirm they got it.
What is ad hoc
Connecting directly to other machines - No wap or router
What does IBSS mean and imply
Independent Basic Service Set implies ad hoc mode.
What does EBSS imply
A wireless network with multiple waps
What does BSS imply
A wireless network with one WAP
How does a WMN work
Wireless Mesh Networks work by having nodes all act like routers, where they forward each other’s packets and all nodes connect to one another.
What are three WAP security methods
Encryption
MAC filtering
authentication
Is MAC filtering an airtight security method?
No, legit MACS can be sniffed out and spoofed.
What does WEP stand for and what is one of its traits
Wired Equivalent privacy uses the same key for every device on the network
What does WPA stand for and what are one of its traits.
Wifi Protected Access uses TKIP (temporal key integrity protocol)
What is TKIP
Temporal Key integrity standard changes the key for every packet exchanged
Which WPA version uses AES?
WPA2
What is WPS
Wifi Protected setup. Press a button to sync your device and router together into a connection. Has many vulnerabilities including a shit password.
How do you use an adhoc wifi network?
Change to it in your adapter settings and have all CPUs use the same SSID with no conflicting IPs.
What is gain
The strength an antenna adds to a WAPS signal
What is polarization
The direction the radio waves move depending on the angle of the antenna.
What is the suggested angle for an antenna
45 degrees
What is the act of using your phone as a wap?
Hotspot
Name three things that block signals
Fridge, microwave, metal plumbing.
What is roaming?
Connecting to a new wap once you leave the signal of a previous one.
What ghz and speed is 802.11a
5.0ghz, 54 mbps.
802.11b
2.4ghz, 11mbps
802.11g
2.4ghz 54 mbps
802.11n
both, 100 mbps
802.11ac
5 (can be both), gigabit
What are the three things to ask yourself when facing a troubleshooting wifi?
Who is affected. Single case or multiple nodes?
What is the nature of the problem. No connection? Intermittent connection?
When did this happen?
How could you try to fix a weak wifi signal
Move closer
Adjust/swap antenna
Move from crowded channel
What can you consult to check the quality of wifi connection
Strength bar, link lights on nic.
Someone is unable to connect to a wap after typing in the SSID and password. What’s the most likely issue?
SSID is typed wrong
