Why Was There So Much Bloodshed On The Plains? Flashcards
What did the government do that lead to little crows war?
Point: underlying tension because dakota sioux already gave up their lands.
Evidence: they already gave up 24 million acres of their land on the promise theyd get protection and supplies from government.
Analasys: already a strong hate between them because they gave up their sacred land in return for being stuck on reservations and therefore have also given up their nomadic lifestyle.
How did treatment of indians on reservations lead to little crows war?
Point: lack of food on reservations they were promised so anger grew
Evidence: santee sioux faced starvation in 1862 because government agent refused to give them food and told them to eat their own dung.
Analasys: this would have outraged the already angry sioux that have given up their lands for promise of supplies on reservations which havent been given to them. Government breaking promises again so there is no more trust and just hate from the santee sioux. They also had no other choice than to rebel because otherwise they wouldve been starved to death so there was no real option.

How did broken promises lead to red clouds war?
Point: there was tension and mistrust because of broken treaties.
Evidence: government promised to respect the land in 1851 Fort Laramie treatie but when gold was found on Bozeman Trail miners started pouring in (1862)
Analasys: this meant the lakota sioux couldnt trust the government and it was also very insulting because they ignored the treaty and moved onto their land that was promised to them. It made them realise if the government wanted to do something they would do it inspite of anything they gad already agreed to.
How did a massacre lead to red clouds war?
Point: sioux wanted revenge which lead to a break out in violence.
Evidence: sand creek massacre where 70-500 innocent and passive natives were killed.
Analasys: the government who had already broken treaties and disrespected them had now massacred a massive amount of them so they were extremely angry and wanted revenge so violence was bound to ensue. Many of the people they killed were innocent and had done nothing wrong.
How did refusal to comply lead to red clouds war?
Point: gave an excuse for war to be declared
Evidence: to stop natives attacking miners on bozeman trail government wanted to sign a new Fort Laramie treaty but Red Cloud refused.
Analasys: they had done this before and the government broke it before so they will just do it again so theres no point in signing it because theyve broken the trust and disrespected the natives.

Analasys: they could no longet trust them because they broke the treaty they originally proposed and they also did this on their sacred land that was the Natives which was also very disrespectful.
How did an insulting offer lead to great sioux war?
Point: sioux refused to accept land transfer which angered US government.
Evidence: government tried to buy sioux lands for 6 million usd.
Analasys: they first broke the treaty which is disrespectful then on their sacred land and now they tried to buy it from them cheaply made the sioux extremely angry so they did not sign which angered the US government.
How did unreasonable demands lead to great sioux war?
Point: used native failure to meet demands to start war.
Evidence: Grant demanded sioux went to reservation forts by Jan 1876.
Analasys: indians already angered completely by broken treaties and insulting offers but travelling to the forts in the winter was very dangerous and put their lives at risk so when they did not do it he used it as an excuse to start a war.
