Q

How did andrew jackson effect the removal of indians?

A

Point: wanted natives removed so used his power to support bullying and intimidation.

Evidence: ignored supreme court ruling in favour of Cherokees 1832.

Analasys: he wanted to remove them from the east so there was more land for white settlers and did not care about the decisions so he sent the army in to remove them and supported white settlers allowing them to bully natives therefore they wanted to move off of the land because they may not have wanted violence and felt they couldnt do anyhting if the government was supporting it.

Q

How did the indian removal act effect the removal of indians?

A

Point: law that persuaded some native to move west in return for money and land.

Evidence: passed in 1830 and some accepted it such as 15,000 choctaw gave up 15 million acres of sacred land. The colony of louisiana was set aside for them.

Analasys: this gave indians a better deal to move west because they may have already been experiencing settler aggresion and this way they would have got land and money for a better starting point. However some did not move and the act was supposed to be voluntary but the government made it clear they would side with settlers over any land disputes. By 1838 46,000 had been removed. This gave jackson a reason to move them and a more legal one becauese he could say it was allowed (not really voluntary) to forcibly remove them using army. They could stay and be killed or move so they had no real choice.

Q

How did white settlers effect the removal of indians?

A

Point: bullied native tribes by squatting on their land and were hostile towards them. Pressured government into indian removal act.

Evidence: moved onto seminole and creek land.

Analasys: very aggressive because they knew they would be supported by governement and even encouraged because they knew they could get their own land and indians would be removed. They also put pressure on government for indian removal act which made indians able to be removed.

Q

How did indian resistance attempts effect their removal?

A

Point: gave jackson excuse to send army

Evidence: creek attacked settlers livestock (that had moved onto their land) in 1835 which meant army sent in. 2nd seminole war after they refused to leave.

Analasys: jackson could say their was a reason to remove them by victimising settlers and saying they were being attacked so he could send the army in although natives were being squatted on or had been experienced hostility from settlers.
