How Typical Were The Lives Of The Lakota Sioux? Flashcards
How typical was the need for buffalo to indian tribes?
Point: all plains tribes were partially reliant on buffalo
Evidence: southern nomadic tribes were similar in the way that they were very reliant on buffalo and it was necessary for their survival. Western tribes like the Nez Perce hunted buffalo in the summer.
Analasys: southern tribes tended to be nomadic and followed the buffalo therefore like the Lakota Sioux they were incredibly dependent on them for food and homes (buffalo hide teepees). Western tribes were similar because they were heavily reliant on buffalo in the summer but in the winter they had fixed villages and hunted fish. Overall there is a major similarity for the need for buffalo for all tribes although they had different cultures and were like different countries.
How typical was a hostile relationship between indians and whites?
Point: it was generally atypical for tribes to be hostile with whites at this time.
Evidence: lakota sioux fought to keep control of their land while the cheyenne saw them as an opportunity to trade and the Nez Perce helped the Lewis and Clarke expedition of 1803-06.
Analasys: lakota sioux experienced more hostility from whites therefore they were hostile towards them but the opposite happened with the cheyenne who even settled near trading ports in order to trade with whites. The Nez Perce could have killed Lewis and Clarke or just not helped them but saw a trading opportunity out of it so they helped and so they survived. This was atypical of the lakota sioux because fewer tribes were hostile to whites.
How typical was a strong warrior culture?
Point: important for most plains indians
Evidence: warrior societies important in lakota sioux and cheyenne tribes and boys learnt to fight from young age.
Analasys: this shows their similarity with other seperate tribes which tells us that warriors had a significant role in many different societies. However in Nez Perce warriors were less influencal than headmen which shows warriors werent key in all tribes. Generally warriors were important in tribes however in the lakota sioux they were more important than in other tribes.
Was a nomadic lifestyle a common living pattern?
Point: some tribes were sedentary while others were just nomadic.
Evidence: lakota sioux were completely nomadic while some cheyenne settled near trading posts.
Analasys: tribes such as the lakota sioux that were more heavily reliant on buffalo needed to be nomadic to survive with the buffalo however the less reliant tribes were they tended to move less such as some cheyenne settling near trading ports because they didnt need to move to live and hunt buffalo this way. The Nez Perce were reliant on buffalo and were nomadic in the summer but during the colder winters it was easier to stay in fixed foahing villages. Tribes that needed buffalo lived more nomadic lifestyles such as the lakota sioux while others didnt need them.
Were the beliefs of the lakota siuox the same as other tribes.
Point: sacred land was central to all tribes however they had their own unique places.
Evidence: lakota sioux thought the black hills of dakota were sacred while the bitteroot mountains were sacred to the Nez Perce.
Analasys: this shows they all had significant sacred places however they had different beliefs based off of these places and where they were located.
