Why Did America Expand 1789-1838? Flashcards
How did pioneer explorers effect the expansion of America?
Point: opened up new areas of wilderness for settlement and possibly farming.
Example: daniel boone settled kentucky in 1775. By 1795 200,000 white settlers had followed.
Analasys: Seeing this done successfully gave others the confidence to do the same so more people moved into newer and less settled areas which meant america expanded. People would have also wanted to go and move to get more land for themselves (maybe farming or a better life).
How did the demand for cotton effect Americas expansion?
Point: fertile lands in deep south settled to create new slave plantations
Evidence: government persuaded to open new areas of georgia to settlement in 1790
Analasys: Profit to be made in new areas where there may be lots of land available so more poeple will move there. As slavery became so significant in american econonomy more people will move and settle in new areas to make a profit so america will have expanded because people are settling new areas.
How did the US government effect the expansion of america?
Point: encouraged land ownership to raise money and strengthen national identity.
Evidence: 1787, jefferson sold off huge areas of the Northwest territory
Analasys: government told people to settle new land so people would because they wouldve trusted them. Gave out large areas of land which tempted people and even other rewards such as money. People wouldve also felt safe to settle new areas if the government told them to.
How did european withdrawal effect the expansion of america?
Point: had no interest in the land so sold it cheaply and it large areas.
Evidence: louisiana purchase from france nearly doubled the size of the usa in 1803.
Analasyis: this meant there was signifacantly more land to be settled on and they didnt have to pay much at all for it because europeans didnt need or want it and because they let go of the land so easily and cheaply it meant that if America wanted that land in the future there wouldnt be any conflict or even a war over it.
How did native indian attacks effect the expansion of America?
Point: native indian attacks lead to the US army forcing tribes off their land to protect settlers.
Evidence: after the battle of fallen timbers ,1794, native tribes were forced off of their land
Analasys: settlers were moving onto native sacred land which was very insulting so they , in some cases, became aggresive towards settlers which gave America the excuse to say fight natives and force them off their land because they victmised settlers saying natives were brutally attacking them.
What is the most significant factor in the expansion of America?
A combination of pioneer explorers and government encouragement gave settlers the confidence and safety to explore and settle new lands and the demand for cotton made poeple want to move for hope of land and money. However European withdrawal there wouldnt be nearly as much land to actually settle and because it was so cheap and given up easily (avoid future conflict over land) it made expnasion incredibly easy.
