What Were the Consequences Of Slavery Growing 1789-1838? Flashcards

1
Q

How were abolitionists a consequence of slavery?

A

Point: calls to ban slavery grew in the north which the south felt threatened their way of life

Evidence: In 1833 Arthur Tappan and William Garrison (started anti-slavery newspaper “The Liberator” in 1831) started an anti-slavery society which by 1840 had 250,000 members.

Analasys: This meant people started their own newspapers and societies that opposed slavery which marks a real de facto change in peoples views even though slavery is still legal. This was also a whole movement that lots of people were involved and believed in which is shown by the 250,000 members of the anti-slavery society which shows it was a significant impact because it effected lots of people.

Q

How was the political power struggle a consequence of slavery growing?

A

Point: north were worried about the growing political power of the south in congress due to the growth in slave plantations

Evidence: there were disputes whether new states like Missouri should ban or allow slavery.

Analasys: the north feared that they would lose important decisions such as this because the south had more politicians in congress since slaves were counted as three fifths of a person. The higher the population the more people got a seat in congress which is what happened in 1812 where slave states had 76 out of 143 members of congress while without counting slaves they would have had only 59 members. This scared the north because it showed that the south were growing in political power and they had very different ways of life which may threaten theirs.

Q

How was the missouri comprimise a consequence of slavery growing?

A

Point: temporary solution which relieved some tension between the north and south because of differing views related to slavery.

Evidence: deal to balance slave and free states to make both sides happier where new states were admitted in pairs with one allowing slavery and the other banning it.

Analasys: this is a direct conseuence of slavery because and agreement has to he made to reduce friction between the north and south on whether it should be allowed. It became a large part of the way of life in the south and not in the north (because some workers feared they would lose jobs themselves because slaves would do them for free) which created tension between the two which meant the missouri comprimise was necessary.
