Which Factors Contributed To Destruction Of Native Culture 1877-1900? Flashcards
How did buffalo hunters destroy native culture?
Point: destroyed source of nomadic culture so took away source of native strength
Evidence: they hunted them just for their hide which was used in factories to near exctinction because there were only 85 by 1889.
Analasys: the only way/ most significant way natives lived was with and because of the buffalo who they were solely reliant on for their nomadic lifestyle. Without the buffalo they didnt have anything to eat or make tipis out of anymore so they couldnt live nomadically which was a main part of their culture.
How did friends of the indians destroy native culture?
Point: wanted to help them but forced western culture on tribes by sending their children to boarding schools and putting them on reservations.
Evidence: organised 100,000 children to go to boarding schools.
Analasys: in these boarding schools they were taught christian west values that cobtradicted thiers so they were stripped of traditional clothing and long warrior hair was cut off. By teaching children other things they would grow up and carry on these which would make native culture get smaller and smaller with generations until it was gone. They also gave them english names to erase their indian heritage.
How did white settlers contribute to the destruction of native culture?
Point: fenced off land which destroyed nomadic lifestyle because the buffalo were disrupted.
Evidence: 500,000 went to Kansas in 1870s
Analasys: this meant there was no space for the buffalos because they fenced off the land for farming and cattle farming and other agricultural practices. This meant there was no space for buffalo who the natives needed to live nomadically which they mow couldnt.
How did US victory in indian wars destroy native culture?
Point: US military takeover of their land so forced onto reservations.
Evidence: despite defeating general custer in 1876 sioux were chased and rounded up in the winter months and forced onto reservations.
Analasys: this meant they could no longer live nomadically which was the biggets part of their culture, their sacred land was now gone and the government could regulate native lives on reservations which meant their culture and traditional practices were impossible to carry on.
What were the consequences of destruction of native culture?
1- tribal lands given up as a result of 1877 Dawes Act / by 1900 two thirds of native land taken.
2- resistance ended by battle of wounded knee in 1890 where 400 ghost dancers surrendered.
3- boarding schools forced christianity, english culture and names onto natives.
