why heavy industry declined after the war Flashcards
Competition from other developing industries caused decline
For example coal mining saw competition from the developing oil gas and electric industries with that the demand for coal within people homes was cut
Withdrawal of government support also caused decline
Scottish industries had to resume to old fashioned ways of working and this was no match for the new industrial world
Lack of investment and poor management also resulted in decline
Scotlands major industries where reliant on old run down machinery and foreign competition forced prices down. Many businesses got away with underpaying workers and this lead to strikes
Foreign competition impacted decline of heavy industries
Shipbuilding for example saw feirs competition from German and Japanese companies resulting in unemployment
A lack of demand for products hugely important to the war effort caused decline
With shipbuilding in decline Scottish steel was no longer in high demand and many munitions factories closed down after returning to there pre war owners
foreign prices and efficiant production of goods led to the decline of some industrys such as the jute industry
When the Indian jute industry resumed and prices fell Dundee based factories couldn’t compete and this resulted in huge levels of unemployment
