explain why rationing was introduced durring the great war Flashcards
Germany was deliberately targeting British u boats in order to push Britain to surrender
By the end of 1917 Britain only had 6 weeks of food left and so rationing meant less u boats needed to be sent to trading ports limiting risk of death and loss of vital supplies
Rationing had to be introduced so everyone would receive a fair share
There was less food on the shelves and people began to panic buy but with food prices rising by 32% working people and family’s where suffering
Rations where also introduced to ensure a plentiful supply off food was being sent to soldiers on the front line
Propaganda was introduced to encourage people at home to eat less bread for example
With the war set to continue for the forceable future and food becoming scarce
The government also feared malnutrition and starvation so rationing had to be introduced to combat this
People where encouraged to grow there own food and be more creative with the food they did have access too
Whilst this was initially successful more needed to be done with fears food shortages would impact moral
There was a lack of experienced workers on farms which impacted efficiency of crop production
Recruitment posters advertised farm work as easy which lead many women not used to hard physical labour into the industry
