Whooping cough cause
Bacterial infection of the lungs and airways, AKA pertussis
Whooping cough symptoms
Similar to cold symptoms
- Runny nose
- Water eyes
- Sore throat
followed by:
Intense coughing bouts, expelling thick mucus and vomiting
Characteristic ‘whoop’ sounds occurs, as they gasp for air
Whooping cough: when to refer
All cases require referral for an antibiotic
If a patient experiences significant breathing difficulties (rapid, shallow breathing, breathlessness, choking), they must go to A&E immediately
OTC products
OTC treatment is reserved for symptomatic relief of fever: paracetamol or ibuprofen
Whooping cough advice
Child must stay away from school 5 days after starting antibiotics or 3 weeks after coughing
Must cover child’s mouth when coughing or sneezing as whooping cough is very contagious
